• DanBred is the name of the national breeding system of Danish pig producers, which is managed by the "Pig Research Centre".

  • DanBred comprises all roles and parties involved that are not connected to the breeding and takes on the marketing, sales and distribution of breeding material.

  • The system currently consists of 25 breeders with approx. 15,000 sows, 125 multiplier herds with approximately 58,000 sows, two artificial insemination companies and ten distributors.

  • DanBred works with three breeds – Landrace (L), Yorkshire (Y) and Duroc (D). A cross between Landrace and Yorkshire (LY/YL) is used as a production sow. For the production of finishers, breeding boars of the Duroc breed are used in conjunction with the LY/YL sows.

  • The purebred population within DanBred currently consists of a total of 6,209 sows under contract, broken down into 2,206 Landrace, 2,217 Yorkshire and 1,786 Duroc sows.

  • DanBred is the clear leader on the Danish market and recognised as one of the world’s best breeding systems, which has been documented by the independent German Warentest IX test in 2008.

  • DanBred has a turnover of approximately 1,500 boars in Denmark and 3,000 boars for export, approximately 300,000 crossbreed sows in Denmark and 250,000 crossbreed sows for export, as well as around five million doses of boar semen in Denmark alone - the export is 700,000 doses of semen. 5,000 purebred gilts were sold in Denmark and 12,100 were exported.
